The Huichol of Mexico

The Huichol live in the Sierra Madre Occidental mountains of Central Mexico where the states of Durango, Zacatecas, Nayarit, and Jalisco meet in a jumble of steep sided baranca's (canyons). The easily defended peaks and fast flowing rivers, made the total conquest by the Spaniards impossible. This region of Mexico is still called, "unknown Mexico".
