Opposition to a Lumber Contract

During the 1980s, the Mexican government pushed for the creation of an organism called the Union of Indigenous Huichol Communities of Jalisco (UCIHJ for its Spanish acronym). During this same period there was a strong incursion of timber interests in the northern region of Jalisco. The business of Enrique Niembro was especially debated and resisted by some Wixarika communities, dividing them from Wautia whose leadership at the time favored the contract.
