Juan Román Negrín Fetter
With an formation in abstract art, Juan Negrín began taking photographs in different Wixárika ranches around 1972. He only began to photograph ceremonies and pilgrimages once he established friendships and acquired the permission from the communities and people being photographed. During the two decades of his photograph career (1970-1990), Negrín always used a Nikon F2 camera with color Kodachrome film. Historically, the Wixarika people do not permit photographs by outsiders in their communities, on their pilgrimages, or in their ceremonies without prior consent and permission. For this reason, the photographic archive created by Negrín are a testament of his intimate relationship with families and communities during a key historical period of Wixarika history. Negrín's photographs have been widely published in various formats and exhibited in different international museums and galleries.
