Juan Negrín ~ Nueva Colonia 1978 ~ Photograph Anthony Somkin

With an arts background in abstract painting, Juan Negrín began his dedication to photography in different Wixarika ranches as early as 1972 but only began to photograph traditional ceremonies and pilgrimages upon having established strong friendships and receiving permission from the communities and individuals involved. During the two decades of his photographic work (1970-1990), Negrín always used a Nikon F2 camera and 35 mm Kodachrome color slide film. Historically, the Wixarika do not permit photographs to be taken in their communities, pilgrimages, or celebrations without prior consent, making Juan's photographic archive a unique testament to his intimate relationship with the communities and families. Negrín's photographs have been printed in various formats and exhibited in many museums and galleries, and appear in numerous publications in multiple languages.
