Girl's Veil-xikuri

Girl's embroidered xikuri - Photograph ©Yvonne Negrín 2018

This girl's veil, xikuri in Wixárika, is embroidered on cotton muslin and embroidered in the cross-stitch with cotton aniline dyed embroidery thread and the edges are finished in a navy blue cotton cloth. The xikuri is typically worn on the head but also as a poncho. The motifs in this piece are the traditional eight point star with the peyote design, the puma, and double headed eagle. Today we still see many xukurite that are made from "manta" or cotton muslin and embroidered, but also and more commonly, ones that are made from bandannas sold commercially.
