Art and Creative Processes in the Circulation of Wixarika Spirituality

This chapter, written by art historian Ingrid Arriaga and geographer Diana Negrín, explores the circulation of Wixarika religious symbols and spiritual practices over the last fifty years, examining the role Wixarika material culture has played in highlighting an aesthetic with spiritual ties. Set against a backdrop of democratization and intense national media exposure—and framed by a neoliberal market economy—these visual representations and practices have heightened global interest in visiting communal territories in the Sierra Madre Occidental as well as sacred sites outside the region; notably, the Wirikuta Natural and Cultural Reserve, a pilgrimage site and habitat for hikuri (peyote) in the San Luis Potosí semi-desert.
