Edwin Forgan Myers
Edwin Forgan Myers was born in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1901. He arrived in Mexico in 1932 and held the position of "Sports Director" at the Mexico City Country Club between 1933 and 1938. Myers was a founding member and president of the Cinema Club de México in 1937. He was also a founding member of the Society of American Ethnologists and a member of the Society of American Archaeologists. Myers' work was primarily focused on preserving the customs, dances, religious ceremonies, and the life of indigenous tribes in Mexico. His photographs and films have been widely used in educational and cultural contexts to document and celebrate the rich heritage of these communities.
During the time Edwin Forgan Myers spent time living in Bolaños, he made many friends among the Wixárika (Huichol) people. These particular pictures were taken in 1938, in the ceremonial centers of Pochotita and Las Latas in the Community of Santa Catarina and in Tuxpan de Bolaños, Community of San Sebastían. The texts below his pictures are exactly as he wrote them, with the exception a very few corrections in the spelling of Wixárika words.
